If a picture paints a thousand words, then words are countless when you smile. Your smile can convey happiness, joy, friendship, understanding, confidence and love. However, if you are reluctant to share your smile, then that picture is not nearly as expressive. Many people simply do not smile because they are embarrassed by the imperfections in their smile, such as chipped, cracked or broken teeth. Are your teeth preventing you from smiling? Porcelain veneers may be the perfect solution. With these magical coverings, Dr. Guardiola, our cosmetic dentist, can transform your smile. In just two appointments, you can have a smile that is simply indescribable.
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers, also called dental veneers or just veneers, are ultra-thin shells of dental porcelain or sometime composite resin that are attached to the facial side of teeth that comprise your smile. Both porcelain and composite resin have a translucent finish so you can count on your veneers to look as natural as real teeth. In addition, veneers can be designed to change the size, shape or color of a tooth. They are individually designed to correct the flaws of a particular tooth. Once each veneer is in place, you have a new, beautiful and natural looking smile.
Porcelain Veneers Step-by-Step
Once you decide to pursue a new smile with porcelain veneers, the first step is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Guardiola. Together you’ll talk about what you want to change about your smile. In addition to chipped, cracked and broken teeth, porcelain veneers can also be used to conceal teeth that are slightly crooked or that have wide gaps between them.
We’ll also need to take molded impressions of your teeth, digital x-rays and photographs of your current smile. These help Dr. Guardiola design veneers that are complementary to your mouth as well as your unique facial features. Our cosmetic dental lab will also use these as guides while fabricating each one of your veneers.
Then, two appointments will need to be scheduled. At the first, Dr. Guardiola will slightly thin the enamel layer of teeth on which the veneers will be bonded. This is done to ensure that your veneers fit comfortably in your mouth and that they adhere well to your teeth.
Once this step is finished, we’ll apply a temporary set of acrylic veneers for you to wear while the permanent set is manufactured in the lab. Then in about two weeks, you’ll return to see your dentist in Wylie, TX, for the final step. Dr. Guardiola will remove your temporary veneers and bond the permanent ones to your teeth. With proper oral hygiene, your porcelain veneers can last for 10 to 15 years.
