Summer Smile Guide

Summer is upon us and we are gearing up for vacations, family gatherings, children’s summer camps, and barbecues with friends! With such busy summer schedules, MCFD has some tips to keep your smile bright while you are on-the-go!

  • We all know summer isn’t complete in Texas without going to a few BBQs! We usually walk away with food stuck in our teeth, so what should we pack?

FLOSS! Flossing is one of the best ways to fight off plaque and tartar keeping your smile bright and clean. Plaque is a film that grows over your teeth every day. Tartar is hardened plaque that has been left on your teeth. Flossing cuts back on tartar and plaque, preventing future issues like: Cavities, Tooth Loss, Gum Disease, Tooth Decay. So ladies and gents pack a travel sized floss in your purse, tote, or car.

  • Still on the topic of food - because lets be honest this is the season of good eats! - some extra items to take with you on-the-go are:

Travel sized toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash! Now don’t think you have to bring everything but the bathroom sink along with you, but having one or two essentials will really help. Keeping floss, a travel brush, or mouthwash with you is a great way to keep your teeth healthy and shining bright. After you’ve eaten, pieces of debris from your meal are usually left behind. A quick floss, rinse, or even brushing of your teeth can cut back on bacteria and plaque.

  • For the busy parents hauling kids to various camps, practices, and play dates all summer long, packing snacks is a must! What foods can keep our teeth clean and brighten them too?

Strawberries, broccoli, yogurt, almonds, pineapple, and celery! These nutritious eats are not only good for keeping your body healthy, slim, and energized, but the properties they contain can whiten your teeth and even help keep plaque away! Raw vegetables, such as broccoli, and seeds/nuts, such as almonds, work as natural teeth exfoliates cleaning off superficial stains. Strawberries contain malic acid, enough of which is essential for strong dental health, as well as, removing stains on your teeth. Pineapple, containing bromelain, works in much the same way as strawberries. Yogurt helps you produce more saliva which helps break down stains, similar to celery with its exceptionally high water content that helps wash away food debris. Packing some of these healthy staples will keep your smile bright and your body healthy on-the-go!

  • For the ladies out there, a purse essential to help that smile look extra bright is:

Bright lipstick/lip gloss! Bright reds, oranges, and pinks are the popular colors for summer right now, and lucky you, they keep your smile looking bright too! For all women, on-the-go or not, brush on a pop of color and your smile will glow!

  • Last but not least, this important essential should be kept with you all summer long:

WATER! With our blazing Texas heat, summer can be pretty brutal. Carrying water around with you not only keeps you hydrated and healthy, but keeps your smile bright! Beverages such as energy drinks, coffee, red/white wine, sugary drinks, citrus drinks, and - sad to say it - even TEA can cause stains on your teeth and destroy enamel. Water is a healthier option all around and important during the hot summer months!

Maxwell Creek Family Dentistry hopes this Summer Smile Guide helps keep your smile bright, and healthy, all summer long.

Have a great summer!
